How do I straighten this tooth?

The types of orthodontic treatment available to patients have never been as diverse as they are today. With so many types of orthodontics available, people often ask what treatment is right for them.

It is important to keep in mind that one type of treatment does not work for everyone. Traditional bracket and wire braces are still widely used today. Many cases of crowding, spacing, underbite, or overbite are too severe to be treated with clear aligners. Cases where compliance can be an issue, such as with a child or teenager, are indicated for traditional braces.

Invisalign requires patients to have the discipline to constantly wear their aligners, as they must be worn at all times except when eating. The average case time for an Invisalign treatment is 14 months, with many treatments and minor tooth movements able to be completed more quickly. An advantage of Invisalign treatment is that a patient is able to preview the final results of a case before he/she starts. The process starts with pictures and Invisalign impressions. After sending the impressions and pictures to the company Aligntech, in 2-3 weeks a digital model is available for the doctor and patient to view together. At this point the patient is able to not only see the final result, but make modifications to his/her case based on individual preferences. Once, the treatment plan is set and agreed upon by the doctor and patient, the aligners are manufactured and sent to the office.

The first Invisalign appointment involves placing small white tooth colored attachments on the teeth. This process is painless and does not require the patient to be anesthetized. Once this is done, the trays are given to the patient. The patient then returns every 5-6 weeks to get three new sets of trays until treatment is complete. Once treatment is finished, retainers are fabricated that must be worn every night so the teeth do not relapse into their previous positions. It is easy to move teeth, but takes the nightly effort of compliant patients with retainers to keep them there.

Invisalign is a great way to painlessly do orthodontics and a tremendous benefit to our patients. We do it in the office and have had great success in giving patients their dream smiles.
